Once fortified, La Ferté-Bernard owned to the Haut-Maine region before the French Revolution. Avesgaud, bishop of Le Mans, created the town in building between two branches of the Huisne river a fortification in 995. |

Then, the town knew its most important development from 1480 and during the hole XVIth century. Indeed, Lord De Guise favoured construction and trading activities. |
Today, its architectural riches such as Notre-Dame des Marais church, Saint-Julien gate, the old cloth and grain market or Saint-Lyphard Chapel, are the memory of the rich past of La Ferté-Bernard. |
